Waverley Markets to celebrate the Launch of the Borders Railway

The Borders Railway is the UK’s biggest domestic rail project in a century encompassing 30 miles of new rail, the longest in the UK in over 100 years. Its opening this month will be watched and celebrated by many both locally and from across the globe.

The City of Edinburgh Council, Midlothian Council and the Scottish Borders Council have been working together with the support of Network Rail, Transport Scotland and VisitScotland to create a series of events and promotions to support the opening and ongoing use of the Borders Railway throughout 2015 and onwards.

To celebrate the momentous opening month, we have been given the opportunity to showcase the best food, drink and crafts from the three regions in a feature market hosted within Waverley Station at Platform 2.

Taking place over a total of 8 days – we have selected the following dates for the market:-

  • 5 and 6 September 2015;
  • 11, 12 and 13 September 2015 ; and
  • 18, 19 and 20 September 2015.

Waverley Station currently sees an average of 71,000 users per day and it is suggested that on weekdays the market will be open from 11am-7pm to appeal to both local residents from all 3 regions and visitors as well as catching commuters. And from 10am-5pm on weekends to capture day trippers.

Additionally, a performance space will be created within the layout of the market to showcase local performers from all 3 regions with specialist performances already planned on the 5th of September. This will be a great draw.

As well as that – a steam train will be operating on the Borders Railway every Sunday throughout September and into October which will bring further additional footfall.

If you would like a stall, please contact Jemma Reid  at JR Events or Tania from Localmotive Markets who will run these markets for the 3 councils..

We look forward to seeing you all there.
